Les Soleils des Indépendances (The Suns of Independence) is the debut novel of Ivorian writer Ahmadou Kourouma, first published in 1968 by Les Presses de l’Université de Montréal. It is widely regarded as one of the founding texts of modern African literature in French.
Plot summary
The novel follows Fama, a prince of the Doumbouya dynasty who is impoverished and marginalized in the years following African independence. Once a man of noble birth in a traditional Malinké society, he finds himself powerless and displaced in the new post-colonial order.
Significance
Kourouma’s radical innovation was to write French using Malinké syntax, proverbs and logic — effectively decolonizing the French language from within. This approach was unprecedented and opened a new path for African writers in French.
