Notebook of a Return to the Native Land (Cahier d’un retour au pays natal) is a long poem by Aimé Césaire, first published in 1939 in the Paris journal Volontés and revised in 1956. It is considered one of the most important works in the French language of the 20th century and the founding text of the Négritude movement.
Overview
The poem is a passionate meditation on Black identity, the legacy of colonialism, and the African diaspora. It blends surrealist imagery with political anger and lyrical beauty to assert the dignity of Black experience against centuries of colonial dehumanization.
